One World has started with awarding the Homo Homini prize. Thursday will see the full start of the film screening programme.

On Wednesday night the 12th edition of One World was officially launched at the Prague Crossroads. As in years past, the Homo Homini award, which is granted by People in Need to honour people who have significantly contributed to promoting human rights, democracy and non-violent resolutions of political conflicts, was given to its winners. This year’s award was granted to Majid Tavakoli and Abdullah Momeni, two imprisoned Iranian student leaders, and in spirit to the entire Iranian pro-reform student movement that has emerged over the last two generations. More information about the Homo Homini award is available here.

Simultaneously, the Lucerna and Svetozor Cinemas both hosted official openings of the festival with the film Green Days, which looks at the current events in Iran. For a sense of the atmosphere of the opening, feel free to look through the photographs in the online photo gallery here.

The regular festival programme goes into full swing on Thursday. In addition to the numerous film screenings, we would also like to invite you to a discussion “The Reform Movement in Iran” which will follow immediately after screening the film Green Days. The guest speaker will be Golnaz Esfandiari from RFE/RL and Seraj Mirdamadi, Iranian journalist. The screening starts at 8pm in the main branch of The Municipal Library of Prague. The discussion will be in English.

There are more discussions with filmmakers that will take place on Thursday following the screenings of the films Survivors – Days in the Zhari Police Station; Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam; Defamation; Hunger; and The Conquest of Inner Freedom. These discussions will also be in English.

We would also like to remind you that the festival programme can be downloaded in pdf format (the complete version of it or individual days). Almost all film screenings are in English or with English subtitles; the list of films only screened in Czech can be found here.
