Blood Relation
Kirvat Dam
Noa Ben Hagai / Israel / 2009 / 75 min.
After her grandmother's death, Israeli director Noa Ben Hagai finds old letters written to this woman from a Palestinian refugee camp in Nablus by her sister Pnina between 1967 and 1971. This reveals a family secret: as a 14-year-old Jewish girl Pnina had secretly disappeared from her home. She got in touch more than 20 years later as a Muslim mother of six children who had married an Arab. Hagai decides to find out more about her past. With the aid of her uncle Shmulik, she tries to re-establish links between the two branches of the family, who are divided not only by time and faith. There are a number of unfathomable mysteries surrounding Pnina's departure. After their first meeting Pnina's daughter Salma and her cousin Shmulik experience several joyous and painful moments, which give us some insights into whether blood ties are important for human relationships? As a person involved in the escalating events, the director also presents us with a dramatic story. She acknowledges that wheels have been set in motion, and gradually realises that this is an irreversible process.
