Mama Illegal - One World Brussels winning film

23.05.2012 | 00:00

A documentary by Austrian director Ed Moschitz titled Mama Illegal (Ed Moschitz / Austria / 2011 / 102 min.) has become the winning film of One World in Brussels 2012. The documentary explores the serious issue of illegal immigration of Moldovan mothers to Autria and Italy, and the impact on their children left behind.

The winning film was selected by the One World Brussels festival jury comprised of the following members: Victoria Pirker, Human Rights Without Frontiers; David Nichols, Amnesty International; Yin Myo, Women's Rights Activist from Burma. Nine documentaries out of 18 featured films entered the competition.

The festival jury´s statement says: "This documentary focusses on an aspect of irregular migration that provoked deep and differing emotional responses from members of the jury. Whilst the film does not offer any answers, it raises a great number of questions about the conditions that lead to irregular migration, about individuals decisions and the institutional response to this". The jury members also pointed out that "by naming Mama Illegal the winning film of One World Brussels 2012, the jury would like to bring home the complexity of  irregular migration to European decision-makers and the wider public, and give a voice to the real family stories hidden by the rhetoric".

The audience of 6th International Human Rights Film Festival One World Brussels reached almost 2 000 spectators. Between May 14 and 23, eighteen films were screened at four locations in Brussels (Bozar Centre for Fine Arts, European Parliament, Goethe Institute, and  Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU). The festival audience had a unique opportunity not only to watch documentaries but also to discuss their themes with interesting international guests such as directors Ed Moschitz (Mama Illegal), Mervi Junnkonen (After Life - 4 Stories of Torture), Petr Lom (Back to the Square), representatives of European institutions and experts from NGOs.

The festival is held under the auspices of Martin Schulz, the President of the European Parliament and Ambassador Milena Vicenová, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the European Union.
