The filmmakers unmask modern society’s fantasies, fears and dreams as they try to get to know the player community hidden behind virtual avatars and voluntarily locked into a simulated post-apocalyptic world.
In the depths of the open world of the computer game DayZ, players fight for survival, build communities and make friends in a simulated environment. Lockdown allowed the filmmakers to spend almost 1,000 hours interacting with them in this world. Seemingly banal situations and aimless wanderings through the countryside alternate with spiritual discussions and musings about ecology, as well as disturbing moments of unexpected violence and intrigue. On a contemplative walk through a virtual world, the film explores the reality of people hidden behind digital masks. This deep exploration of human interaction in an online environment won two major awards from Visions du Reel.
