Queendom
Gena, a Russian queer artist, expresses herself through outlandish costumes. Her public performances attract not only new followers but also aggression from passers-by.
Etero, 48, works in a remote Georgian village drugstore. Unmarried and childless, she doesn’t fit into the local community. Independent and of firm principles, she never talks much. One day when picking blackberries above a steep slope, she trips and almost falls into a raging river. After this close call, she begins to perceive the world with greater intensity and through all her senses. But her late sexual awakening brings Etero and those around her out of their comfort zone. Told with insight, this emancipatory drama is adapted from a novel by Tamta Melashvili, a Georgian writer engaged in the struggle for women’s rights. Like its protagonist, the film is characterised by a mixture of earthiness and casual charm.
