Separated

(Separated)

The film charts how families were separated at the USA’s southern border during Donald Trump’s presidency, affecting thousands of children and their parents. Re-enactments document the new “zero tolerance policy” – the forced separation of families and mass incarceration.

The procedural documentary goes behind the bureaucratic scenes to show how this policy was created and implemented. It explains how the main authors – Trump’s adviser Stephen Miller and Attorney General Jeff Sessions – abolished the previous catch-and-release system, which allowed migrants to remain in the USA pending an immigration hearing.

Based on journalist Jacob Soboroff’s book Separated: Inside an American Tragedy, the film features interviews with key figures in US migration and asylum policy. Their testimonies, often whistleblowing in nature, reveal the background of this controversial policy.
