This provocative film offers a surprising picture of today’s China and people on the fringes of society. Despite its decadent and exploitative tone, director Zhenming Guo’s absorbing film escaped Chinese censorship and made its way to international festivals. Raw, physical and uncomfortable, it follows a poet returning to his hometown.

He finds a place in moral and social decay, reflecting a part of Chinese society that has been forgotten during the country’s economic growth. Dark and full of explosive imagery, the narrative tracks the protagonist’s trauma.

Riverboom

In 2002, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Claude Baechtold, a young Swiss graduate who identifies as an anti-militarist, finds himself in a war zone in Afghanistan. He sets off, not entirely voluntarily, on an extensive journey across the country with two reporter friends.

Sabbath Queen

With Orthodox Jewish roots, Amichai Lau-Lavie continues his family legacy as a rabbi, but his queer identity also matters to him. After coming out in the 1990s, he left Israel, moved to New York, and focused on reforming Judaism. He has organised art happenings to support women and the LGBT+ community and has found fame as a drag queen.
