A girl looks up and wades through a flooded village with plants and a hut visible.

Mighty Afrin: In the Time of Floods

(Mighty Afrin: In the Time of Floods)

Afrin, an orphaned 12-year-old girl lives on a muddy island in the Brahmaputra River. For her, water is both home and enemy. As the water rises, she decides to embark on a dangerous journey to find her missing father.

The only world Afrin knows consists of palm fronds, a small shelter, and endless expanses of water. But because of global warming, her home will soon disappear. She must decide whether to disappear with it or, like millions of other climate refugees, seek refuge in the capital of Bangladesh. The documentary depicts life in the grip of the world’s third largest river in slow motion, from endless days filled with paddling and picking water lilies, through life on a smouldering municipal dump, to her first experiences on stage. In the midst of it all, Afrin grows from a child into a young woman searching for her place in a slowly sinking world.
