Flickering Lights

(Flickering Lights)

The rhythm of life in Tora is dictated by the alternating hours of daylight and darkness. The film tracks the slow process of electrification and what happens when things once shrouded in darkness are illuminated by fluorescent light.

Tora, a village on the India-Myanmar border, is a forgotten corner of the world without roads, schools, running water, or jobs. The locals are locked in a prolonged conflict with the government. Time seems to have stopped here: people cook on open fires at home, weave grass baskets by torchlight and sing hymns in the evenings. Everyone believes that electricity will kick-start a positive change, bring new economic opportunities and the desired sense of independence. But when the first lightbulbs come to life and the dream fridge arrives, the locals begin to realise that the price of technological progress includes the loss of many things they had taken for granted.
