As the Tide Comes In

(As the Tide Comes In)

The community on the sinking island of Mandø is troubled by both rising sea levels and loneliness. But rather than leaving, the locals look for various, sometimes bizarre, ways of coping with an uncertain future.

The 27 people living on the Danish island of Mandø live in solitude, ruled by the ebb and flow of the tide. Because of climate change, their island is slowly becoming smaller and less inhabitable. Neighbours spend evenings fantasising about building a modern-day ark that will serve as a refuge if the island is flooded. Together they watch TV, drink beer, go to church and grumble about the government that refuses to allocate funds to save the island. Meanwhile farmer Gregers is waiting to hear if he’s met the conditions for the TV reality show Farmer Wants a Wife, so that he can woo the love of his life in front of the whole of Denmark, and Mandø’s oldest resident celebrates her 100th birthday. Here time never hurries.
