Hanging Without Walls

Directors Jana Durajová and Lena Kušnieriková began documenting the imminent renovation of the Slovak National Gallery while still students. But, due to constant delays and waiting for funding and official permits, the filming and the renovation took almost 10 years.

The longitudinal documentary tracks not only the renovation of a key cultural institution but also the resolve and patience of Alexandra Kusé, the National Gallery’s former director, who devoted an admirable amount of time and energy to the project.

The film uses her daily struggles with bureaucracy, the ministry and human pettiness to compose a partly grim, partly absurd study of the systemic ills that prevent Slovak culture from developing freely.

The Most Beautiful Corner in the World

At a TV studio’s casting call, applicants share their impressions of Slovakia. Ultimately a young Ukrainian woman gets the job. After the massive invasion of Ukraine, the fictional Slovak station’s reports take viewers on visits to nationalist groups, political rallies and cultural institutions, where various views on the country’s past and present collide.

The Killing of a Journalist

In February 2018, three gunshots in a house in Velka Macha ended the lives of a young couple. Their bodies were not discovered until four days later. Soon after, the names Kuciak and Kushnirova became symbols of the largest protests in Slovakia since 1989.
