The Slovak government’s motto is: “The less educated the nation, the more votes for populists.” So schools are short on funding and students are emigrating in droves due to the acutely felt political gloom.

Bratislava grammar school students begin their last year full of optimism but end up disappointed by the parliamentary election result as they watch the vote counting during their school-leaving celebration. The last straw is the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Students (and others) face the question of whether to stay in a country where incivility and crassness prevail or to seek their fortune beyond its borders. Through young people, the documentary opens the question of “Where are you heading Slovakia?”

Hanging Without Walls

Long Live Death

Bratislava’s celebration of the 31st anniversary of the Velvet Revolution brought a unique tribute to democracy. At a time of a growing pandemic, the streets were inundated by the far right and the disinformation scene.

The Most Beautiful Corner in the World

At a TV studio’s casting call, applicants share their impressions of Slovakia. Ultimately a young Ukrainian woman gets the job. After the massive invasion of Ukraine, the fictional Slovak station’s reports take viewers on visits to nationalist groups, political rallies and cultural institutions, where various views on the country’s past and present collide.

Confession

Rebeka always felt safe in church. Then something happened and she never again went to confession. Years later, in a personal documentary, she reopens old wounds and speaks out regarding a case of sexual abuse about which only her best friend knew.

The Killing of a Journalist

In February 2018, three gunshots in a house in Velka Macha ended the lives of a young couple. Their bodies were not discovered until four days later. Soon after, the names Kuciak and Kushnirova became symbols of the largest protests in Slovakia since 1989.
