RAPTURE II – Portal transports the audience in a markedly physical way to a Donbass flat that was abandoned by vogue dancer Marko when he fled the war. The hypnotic, almost horror-like film combines a digital reconstruction of the flat based on photos with dynamic dance sequences.
The contrast between the energy of the human body and fragility in the shadow of war emphasises the power and necessity of movement as a means of expression and survival, forcing one to float through space in a seemingly endless loop. Marko’s memories of his first place of freedom are interspersed with abstract images that evoke the sadness of loss and the search for identity. This profound meditation on home, memories, and resilience in the face of destruction ultimately brings surprising hope. (The film may cause nausea.)
