Hikari, aged 10, loves rice, and dreams of growing it and cooking meals for her family. She decides to make her dream come true and tries to grow her own rice.

She encounters initial setbacks with the purchase of unsuitable seeds on the internet, and so visits Mr Yamanaka, an experienced farmer, who gives her high quality seedlings and valuable advice. Hikari faces many challenges, including protecting the plants from birds and bad weather, but her determination leads her to eventually harvest her own rice. Her story inspires children to appreciate local food and the hard work of farmers.
