Special thanks
One World gives way to new impulses and stories to audiences every year thanks to the generous support of partners from the private and public sectors. For us, this support is an important gesture of trust not only in the main messages of the festival but also in a healthy, civil society in the broader sense.
Petr Pavel
President of the Czech Republic
One World is a cinematic event offering audiences not only cultural enrichment but also opportunities for reflection and for gaining fresh perspectives on the world around us. It is crucial to keep in mind that human rights are not guaranteed, and regrettably, there are still numerous regions where they are being violated. This festival grants us the opportunity to intimately engage with stories from diverse corners of the globe. It may also prompt us to recognise that our own situation back home is not always as dire as we sometimes perceive it to be. Simply because we're capable of safeguarding something as fundamental as the right to a dignified life, property, and freedom of expression.
Wishing you an inspiring cinematic journey.
Jan Lipavský
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic
I am delighted to extend my support once again to One World International Human Rights Film Festival, which will be held under this new moniker from 20 March to 21 April 2024 in cinemas across the Czech Republic and in Brussels, Belgium. The festival has evolved a lot over the course of its 25 years of existence, yet its core mission remains steadfast – to shed light on human rights issues and emphasise the critical importance of protecting these fundamental freedoms. I wish all those in attendance an enriching experience – whether they opt for classic documentaries or the newly added fictional films – and I wish the organisers a successful 26th edition of the festival.
Martin Baxa
Minister of Culture
The international human rights film festival One World has now entered its twenty-sixth season. With its fresh visual vibe and newly expanded program, this year’s attendees can anticipate not only documentary films but also fictional works as well. One World has long since evolved beyond its “mere” film festival roots, ultimately becoming a full-on cultural experience that’s in a class of its own, serving as a unique space where experiences, insights, and moments can be shared and exchanged, all whilst fostering collective understanding and enlightenment.
Arthouse cinema and festival productions, films in both extended and virtual reality, distinguished guests, creators, and film protagonists — all this presented to you within an open and accessible environment full of acceptance. This year's edition will bring an extended screening period plus new, attractive screening locations.
I eagerly look forward to the festival's distinctive atmosphere, enriching encounters, and outstanding films.
Bohuslav Svoboda
Mayor of Prague
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am certain that One World Festival will once again bring to light the sombre realities we may prefer to ignore. Yet, turning a blind eye to them would only lead to hypocrisy and evasion. I deeply value those who recognise that our world is not solely filled with joy and laughter. It is crucial for all of us to acknowledge this and strive to support one another. As you immerse yourself in the films screened at One World this year, you may find yourself shedding tears, and perhaps even sharing laughter, but most importantly, you will be encouraged to think—think about others. This, indeed, is the cornerstone of peaceful coexistence, alongside compassion, understanding, courage, and tolerance. As Mahatma Gandhi famously put it, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Let us work together towards creating a unified, content, and happy world.
Prof. Milena Králíčková
Rector of Charles University
One World Film Festival is just our cup of tea – if you'll indulge me in making such an analogy – and it’s not just because of its myriad of documentary films, which delve into human rights violations and bring authentic stories and new perspectives to the forefront. What truly resonates is our shared dedication to fostering awareness and respect for upholding human rights, a commitment that’s always rooted in our understanding of the world around us. Charles University, as outlined in its core principles, rejects all forms of discrimination and has long advocated for equal access for both students and staff. In addition to addressing gender equality issues, it strives to tackle a range of other challenges – including providing support for caregivers, students, and staff who face various disadvantages or find themselves struggling to maintain a work-life balance, and much more. Recently, a university-wide ombudsman role was created to help instill a culture of equal opportunity and promote a safe environment.
For these reasons, I greatly appreciate the festival’s commitment to ensuring barrier-free access for its audiences – whether it's through audio descriptions for films, induction loops, or relaxed screenings for those with mental disabilities, and so on.
I wish the festival tremendous success!
Markéta Pekarová Adamová
President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic
Dear beloved supporters of the human rights film festival One World,
The festival’s very namesake has subtly reminded us for more than a quarter of a century now that our world is, in reality, just one and only one. There is no “Planet B”. And singular is also the pain it afflicts us in various forms and places. I’m under the impression that even this year’s edition of One World Film Festival will not only serve as an invaluable source of knowledge and edification but will also inspire us to continually expand our own horizons and cultivate our sense of empathy. Above all, it is my hope that the stories captured in these documentary films will strongly encourage us to act and support people in need all around the world.
