Writing Hawa
Afghan documentarist Najiba Noori’s film is both an intimate portrait of her mother Hawa and a story of female emancipation in her homeland. Hawa was married at 13 to a much older man she now cares for.
What do you do if someone steals your computer and threatens to send intimate photos of you to all your contacts.? That happens to filmmaker Pati, who bravely decides to document her experience as a sexual blackmail victim.
In this innovative film made using phone and computer footage, Pati goes through a range of emotions: panic, a sense of helplessness and loss of confidence in the police investigation, ending with the determination to find the blackmailer and a way out of the predicament.
She captures this in a visually arresting way, which fittingly gives the impression that we have been watching her online the whole time through footage similar to that which we normally consume or share online ourselves.
