The Buriti Flower

(Crowrã)

80 years of persecution, freedom struggles and traditional rituals – the turbulent history of the Krahô who live in the heart of Amazonia comes to life in this Cannes award-winning narrative film poem.

The film tracks the troubled history of the Krahô of Brazil, from the 1940 massacre initiated by two farmers to now, when these indigenous people must protect their sacred territory from expanding corporations. Historical trauma is passed down the generations along with traditional rituals. In the film, the past comes face to face with the present, reality with visions, and an ethnographic documentary with a melancholic ballad. This compelling tale of human resilience and memory is told by members of the tribe who, during the collective filming, stood both in front of and behind the camera.
