Black Snow

(Black Snow)

Instead of morning fog, a carbon monoxide cloud rolls over Kiselyovsk’s rooftops and black snow falls to the ground. In Kuzbass, a proud mining region, the volume of extracted black coal matters more than human lives.

Without professional equipment, using only her phone, journalist Natalia Zubkova captures the daily reality of Kiselyovsk as it slowly becomes enclosed and cut off from the world by coal mines. When her reports hit front pages around the world, she finds herself in the crosshairs of the Russian secret service.

Despite constant police surveillance, Natalia doesn’t give up and submits her candidacy for the city council. This is the last straw for the local coal mafia, and the lives of Natalia and her family are in imminent danger.
