(Floating With Spirits)

The Mexican foothills are swathed in fog. On the Day of the Dead – Día de Muertos – the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is thinnest and Nature’s spirits awaken and speak.

“Memories are like a map for the spirits,” whispers an eerie voice as we roam the countryside that evokes memories of the narrator’s shaman grandmother. The burbling river calls to mind her voice, the blooming meadows the scent of her favourite flowers. From the cemetery, amidst a sea of candles, we watch the rituals honouring the dead. The flames guide spirits through the hereafter, reminding them of the warmth of home. The filmmaker spent years studying the native Mexican population and their creation and afterlife myths, using the film to pass on her findings. The impressive visual side of the project brings the mysterious spirits of nature to life, and they share the world’s ancient secrets with us. Can we heed them?
