Hanging Without Walls is a documentary from The Slovak Journey category that follows the 10-year renovation of the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava. In addition to the renovation of the gallery, the documentary shows the difficulty of dealing with bureaucracy and the systemic senselessness that obstruct the development of Slovak culture. Even more distressing is the story of Viktor Orbán's Hungary presented in the documentary Democracy Noir. The film is part of the Searching for Freedom category and teaches viewers about three activists striving to ensure that the local and international media have correct information about how exactly Orbán is threatening democracy and destroying Hungary. Their struggles inevitably lead multiple clashes with those in power, nevertheless they are committed to their roles as beacons of light in the midst of political darkness.
Volver a Volver is a Czech Competition documentary about one of the many families from Venezuela who decide to immigrate due to the country’s difficult political and economic situation. The Sykora’s head back to the Czech Republic – a country their ancestor’s left generations ago – as part of the repatriation programme for former Czech citizens and their descendants. The film documents their daily struggles as they try to meet their basic needs and poses the question: will they ever be able to fully integrate?
Nice Ladies is a documentary in the Female Gaze category that tells the story of an unconventional cheerleading squad from Ukraine. Despite being different, their passion and energy for dance helps them overcome prejudice and succeed against teams much younger than they are. Although the war tears them apart, they continue to support one another from afar. The story is a personal testimony to the difficulty of leaving one’s homeland and the loss of identity that goes along with it. The screening is also dedicated to the memory of the team's captain.
If viewers do feel like traveling, however, they can head to Beirut, Lebanon. A Man Fell is a documentary that shows us the former Gaza Building, once one of the Middle East’s best hospitals, today a ruin inhabited only by people who have nowhere else to go. The film includes interviews locals about the supposed story about a man falling out of one of the windows. The story of the man who fell and the imagery of the abandoned hospital paint a picture of daily life, one that is not shown in news coverage.
