One World starts in Brussels
For the 16th time, the festival will fill cinema halls all over Brussels, including BOZAR, cinema galleries and the European Parliament building. One World in Brussels will take place from 20 to 27 April 2023 and will give audiences the opportunity to see a selection of 12 films, 11 of which will be accompanied by expert debates. The on-stage discussions will feature insights from human rights defenders, politicians, filmmakers and representatives of international NGOs.
The theme of this year's festival is The Cost of Safety. With this theme, the festival's creators want to make viewers in the Czech Republic and Belgium think critically about how much they would pay for safety and freedom.
During the opening night of the festival, the Ukrainian documentary Overcoming the Darkness will be screened, which shows the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its consequences for different parts of the country. The theme of the war in Ukraine will also be explored in the film We Will not Fade Away, which won the International Jury Award for Directing at One World in Prague. Set in a village in the Donbass, it tells the story of five young people who dream of leaving the war zone and seeing the world.
In addition to the war in Ukraine, the festival will also shine a light on other crucial topics such as investigative journalism, cyberbullying, exploitation, political activism and discrimination. Screenings are free to attend by reservation.
